The Color Purple: I’m Here

The Color Purple is an extremely controversial play and novel that portrays the horrors done do women and children during the late 1920s. It more indepthly describes the life and trials of one black woman, who is continuously tortured throughout her life. The main character Nellie is told everyday that she is worthless and forced to be a slave to her “husband”. He tells her what is is, and is not allowed to do. Yet, through all her troubles she finds the strength to carry on and be strong. She sings in her song, “I’m Here” about how no one can tear her down and make her feel like nothing, she is here to stay, and although she doesn’t haven’t a lot, she has enough to survive. Nellie embodies what a real woman is. She does not succumb to others, especially men.
