Melissa
Etheridge, a music icon, came out with the album Yes I Am, after publicly coming out as a lesbian at Bill Clinton’s initial Inauguration.
Her single, “Come to my Window,” off of Yes I Am, symbolized her struggles of growing up gay, and feeling extreme loneliness, that no one around her understood. Melissa Etheridge grew up in a time when homosexuality wasn't talked about. In this article by Metro Weekly, Etheridge admits that
there was a time when the media only wanted to talk about her sexuality.
Etheridge said this didn’t bother her though, because she was speaking her
truth. Because of her openness about her life through interviews and her music,
other celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, and Rosie O’ Donnell felt compelled to
come out of the closet, as well.
